Managing and using AI resources within an organization can often feel like you’re herding cats. Whether you’re a platform engineer - responsible for ensuring only approved models are in use, or an app developer - just trying to get access to the models and inference servers you need for development, this information is often unorganized, unclear and hard to find.

In this talk, we will share our experiences and lessons learned modeling AI assets in Backstage, both positive and negative. We’ll discuss how Backstage can be an effective platform for managing AI resources, and what improvements we think could be made - and where - in order to continue to drive adoption of Backstage for organizations doing AI development. Finally, we’ll walk you through how to set up your own AI catalog in Backstage, and how we think it can be extended through integrations like software templates, Tekton pipelines, and API gateways.
